University of Arizona:
“Moving Holograms: From Science Fiction to Reality .
A team led by the UA’s Nasser Peyghambarian has developed a new type of holographic telepresence that allows the projection of a three-dimensional moving image without the need for special eyewear such as 3D glasses or other auxiliary devices.
Remember the Star Wars scene in which R2D2 projects a three-dimensional image of a troubled Princess Leia delivering a call for help to Luke Skywalker and his allies? What used to be science fiction is now close to becoming reality thanks to a breakthrough in 3D holographic imaging technology developed at the University of Arizona College of Optical Sciences.
A team led by optical sciences professor Nasser Peyghambarian developed a new type of holographic telepresence that allows the projection of a three-dimensional, moving image without the need for special eyewear such as 3D glasses or other auxiliary devices. The technology is likely to take applications ranging from telemedicine, advertising, updatable 3D maps and entertainment to a new level. (…)”

Nature:
“Star Wars-style holograms: a new hope?
The fuzzy three-dimensional (3D) image of Princess Leia calling for help in the 1977 film Star Wars demonstrates an effect that researchers have long been trying to achieve: holograms that move in real time. Now, a material that can store shifting holographic data moves the fantasy into the realms of reality. The substance could have future applications in medicine and manufacturing, as well as in the entertainment industry. (…)”

FOXnews:
“The first real-time moving hologram was set to become reality – 33 years after 3D telepresence appeared in a scene in “Star Wars,” U.S. researchers said Thursday.
Princess Leia appeared in holographic form in a famous “Star Wars” scene, pleading “Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi. You’re my only hope.” Now, scientists at the University of Arizona in Tucson claim they are close to producing the very same form of holographic video.
The new development means that a viewer who moves around the hologram will be able to see objects from different angles instead of from one perspective, as with 3D television.
“Holographic telepresence means we can record a three-dimensional image in one location and show it in another location, in real time, anywhere in the world,” said Nasser Peyghambarian, who led the project.
Until now, 3D technology was created from a picture of a static object. The new technology, using a new type of photosensitive material, allows the image to be updated every two seconds, providing nearly real-time video.
The technology would allow people to appear at far-off conferences, and specialist surgeons would be able to carry out complex operations remotely. Car designers and architects would be able to inspect their creations in three dimensions. (…)”

Universe Today:
“It Could Be Our Only Hope for True 3D Holograms.
This is great: Now anyone can send holographic appeals to Obi Wan Kenobi just like Princess Leia. A team from the University of Arizona’s College of Optical Sciences has developed a system that can produce truly three-dimensional images and the viewer is not required to wear special 3D glasses. The system allows the projection of a three-dimensional, moving image that refreshes every 2 seconds. So in many respects it would be very similar to R2D2’s projected holographic message in Star Wars. (…)”
