A resposta é NÃO.

Japan Quake May Have Struck Atmosphere First

    http://www.space.com/13236-japan-quake-struck-atmosphere.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+spaceheadlines+%28SPACE.com+Headline+Feed%29&utm_content=Google+Feedfetcher

The devastating earthquake that struck Japan this year may have rattled the highest layer of the atmosphere even before it shook the Earth, a discovery that one day could be used to provide warnings of giant quakes, scientists find.

The magnitude 9.0 quake that struck off the coast of Tohoku in Japan in March ushered in what might be the world’s first complex megadisaster as it unleashed a catastrophic tsunami and set off microquakes and tremors around the globe.

Scientists recently found the surface motions and tsunamis this earthquake generated also triggered waves in the sky.

These waves reached all the way to the ionosphere, one of the highest layers of the Earth’s atmosphere.

Now geodesist and geophysicist Kosuke Heki at Hokkaido University in Japan reports the Tohoku quake also may have generated ripples in the ionosphere before the quake struck.

Disruptions of the electrically charged particles in the ionosphere lead to anomalies in radio signals between global positioning system satellites and ground receivers, data that scientists can measure.

Heki analyzed data from more than 1,000 GPS receivers in Japan. He discovered a rise of approximately 8 percent in the total electron content in the ionosphere above the area hit by the earthquake about 40 minutes before the temblor.

This increase was greatest about the epicenter and diminished with distance away from it.

“Before finding this phenomenon, I did not think earthquakes could be predicted at all,” Heki told OurAmazingPlanet. “Now I think large earthquakes are predictable.”

Analysis of GPS records from the magnitude 8.8 Chile earthquake in 2010 revealed a similar pattern, Heki said. These anomalies also may have occurred with the Sumatra magnitude 9.2 earthquake in 2004 and the magnitude 8.3 Hokkaido earthquake in 1994, he added.

If true, further research could lead to a new type of early-warning system for giant earthquakes.

The anomaly is currently seen before earthquakes only with magnitudes of about 8.5 or larger, Heki cautioned.

Still, if researchers can detect what specifically causes this ionospheric phenomenon, it also might be possible to detect precursory phenomena for smaller earthquakes, he said.

Heki did caution that the ionosphere is highly variable — for instance, solar storms can trigger large changes in total electron content there.

Before researchers could develop an early-warning system for earthquakes based on ionospheric anomalies, they would have to rule out non-earthquake causes.

Heki detailed his findings online Sept. 15 in the journal Geophysical Research Letters.

    Satellite observations
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earthquake_prediction#Satellite_observations

    Demeter microsatellite

The “Detection of Electro-Magnetic Emissions Transmitted from Earthquake Regions” satellite, constructed by CNES, has made observations which show strong correlations between certain types of low frequency electromagnetic activity and the most seismically active zones on the Earth, and have shown a sharp signal in the ionospheric electron density and temperature near southern Japan seven days before a 7.1 magnitude occurred there (on August 29 and September 5, 2004, respectively).

    QuakeSat nanosatellite

Quakesat is an earth observation nanosatellite based on 3 CubeSats. It was designed to be a proof-of-concept for collecting extremely low frequency earthquake precursor signals from space. The primary instrument is a magnetometer housed in a 2 foot (0.6 m) telescoping boom.

    The ESPERIA Project

ESPERIA is an equatorial space mission mainly concerned with detecting any tectonic and preseismic related signals. More in general, it has been proposed for defining the near-Earth electromagnetic, plasma, and particle environment, and for studying perturbations and instabilities in the ionosphere-magnetosphere transition region. To study earthquake preparation processes and anthropogenic impacts in the Earth’s surface, a phase A study has been realized for the Italian Space Agency.

    DESDynI radar satellite

The Deformation, Ecosystem Structure and Dynamics of Ice (DESDynI) radar satellite, which was canceled in the White House’s 2012 budget proposal, would have the capacity to identify elastic strain in tectonic plates, combining L-band interferometric synthetic aperture radar and a multi-beam infrared lidar to detect strains in the Earth’s surface that could lead to serious earthquakes.

    TwinSat

Russia and the United Kingdom have agreed to jointly deploy two satellites in 2015 that will measure electromagnetic signals that are released from the earth’s crust prior to earthquakes. The project is said to be able to “help predict earthquakes and potentially save thousands of lives.”

    Animal behavior
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earthquake_prediction#Animal_behavior

Animal behavior reports are often ambiguous and not consistently observed. In folklore, some animals, especially dogs, cats, chickens, horses, toads and other smaller animals, have been identified as being more able to predict earthquakes than others.

It has been postulated that the reported animal behavior before an earthquake is simply their response to an increase in low-frequency electromagnetic signals.[72]

In Italy, findings from 2009 suggest that toads are able to detect pre-seismic cues.[73] In the 2011 Virginia earthquake, animals at the Smithsonian National Zoological Park were reported to have sensed the Earthquake coming.
