    http://www.amazon.com/Charles-Darwin-H-M-S-Beagle-Eisenberg/dp/B0033RRY88/ref=la_B00IPG778E_1_2/176-9951161-4733161?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1423770786&sr=1-2

The “We Were There” series took young readers along historical experiences by adding a youthful, fictional character who could experience real events. In this book a boy named “Dick Covington” is created to play the role of cabin boy on the H.M.S. Beagle during its famous journey of discovery with Charles Darwin aboard.

I loved this book as a kid, not so much for the scientific stuff, which I came to appreciate later, but because it was an imaginative adventure.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Master_and_Commander:_The_Far_Side_of_the_World / http://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Master_and_Commander

How the pseudoscience of Social Darwinism nearly destroyed humanity
    http://www.technology.org/2013/09/23/pseudoscience-social-darwinism-nearly-destroyed-humanity/

    Algumas citações:

Following the publication of Darwin’s On the Origin of Species in 1860, many political theorists and opportunistic politicians applied his findings to human society.

In the 20th century, these ideas were put into practice — and it nearly destroyed us.

Here’s why Social Darwinism was one of the worst ideas ever.

The Right Idea At The Wrong Time <———————————

As a term, “Social Darwinism” was used sparingly in the 19th Century; it was only popularized in the United States in 1944 by historian Richard Hofstadter.

And indeed, it’s a term that casts a wide net, encompassing several different areas as it pertains to the extension of Darwinism to the social realm.

Indeed, its wide interpretation led thinkers to a number of different conclusions, including the reinforcement of individualism and minimalist government, theories about racial and societal “hygiene” and eugenics, notions of racial superiority and the justified use of force, and the idea that the human species could be moulded by the state.

Part of the problem is that Darwin’s theory arrived at a dangerous time — a time when Western cultural and scientific sensibilities were not entirely ready for it; it was an idea ahead of its time, and by consequence, was misappropriated to realms into which it didn’t belong.

The acceptance of Social Darwinism was not only a symptom of an emerging and overly enthusiastic scientism, but also the result of poorly developed conceptions surrounding race, ethnicity, and biological diversity.

It appeared during a time of deeply embedded and unquestioned racism, where the conditions of under-developed nations and poverty-stricken visible minorities were attributed to racial inferiority.

Mais informação bibliográfica sobre o Darwinismo Social:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_Darwinism / http://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darwinismo_social

    Citação:

Creationists have often maintained that social Darwinism—leading to policies designed to make the weak perish—is a logical consequence of "Darwinism" (the theory of natural selection in biology).

Biologists and historians have stated that this is a fallacy of appeal to nature, since the theory of natural selection is merely intended as a description of a biological phenomenon and should not be taken to imply that this phenomenon is good or that it ought to be used as a moral guide in human society.

Gosto bastante do trabalho desta autora:

What the challenge of pseudo science shows is how tenuous scientific authority and the value placed on disinterested research really is.

Such inquiry has not always been valued and there is no reason to expect it to be valued about partial inquiry in the future.

Arendt suggests that the origin of the value in disinterested inquiry was Homer’s decision to praise the Trojans equally as he lauded the Achaeans. Never before, she writes, had one people been able to look “with equal eyes upon friend and foe.”

It was this revolutionary Greek objectivity that became the source for modern science.

For those who do value science and understand the incredible advantages it has bestowed upon modern civilization, it is important to recall that the Homeric disinterestedness is neither natural nor necessary.

In the effort to fight pseudo science, we must be willing and able to defend just such a position and thus what Nietzsche calls the “pathos of distance” must be central to any defense of the modern scientific world.

When science loses its authority, pseudo science thrives.

That is the situation we are increasingly in today. There are no objective tests and no clear lines demarcating good and bad science.

And that leaves us with the challenge of the modern age: to pursue truth and establish facts without secure or stable foundations.

Umas perguntas ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loaded_question) inquietantes (provocadoras?):

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milgram_experiment / http://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Experi%C3%AAncia_de_Milgram

Supercooperators: The Mathematics of Evolution, Altruism and Human Behaviour
    http://www.amazon.com/Supercooperators-Mathematics-Evolution-Altruism-Behaviour/dp/1847673376

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martin_Nowak

The wormhole technology is first used to send digital information via gamma rays, then developed further to transmit light waves.

The media corporation that develops this advance can spy on anyone anywhere it chooses.

A logical development from the laws of space-time allows light waves to be detected from the past. This enhances the wormhole technology into a "time viewer" where anyone opening a wormhole can view people and events from any point throughout time and space.

When the technology is released to the general public, it effectively destroys all secrecy and privacy. The novel examines the philosophical issues that arise from the world's population (increasingly suffering from ecological and political disturbances) being aware that they could be under constant observation by anyone, or that they could observe anyone without their knowledge.

Anyone is able to observe the true past events of their families and their heroes. An underground forms which attempts to escape this observation; corruption and crime are drastically reduced; nations discover the true causes and outcomes of international conflicts; and religions worldwide are forced to re-evaluate their divine histories.

    😉
