A Sociedade precisa de Pensamento Crítico

11

    1) What If a University Was Only Designed to Produce Workers?
    http://www.wired.com/2015/02/university-designed-produce-workers/?utm_content=buffer80d51&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter.com&utm_campaign=buffer

Yes, humans with a college degree would be better at some jobs – but you can’t make a college degree job training.

    But what if we did?

What if we optimized the whole higher education system to train and develop humans to be work-ready?

Here are some things that we should do:

    What about internships?

Maybe the best way for students to be work-force ready is to just send them out to a job. Really, this would be win-win. The students would pay the university tutiion so that they could become an intern. The employers would get free workers and train them in the processes. Everyone gets something (really, this is win-win-win).

    Stop having college majors.

Why major in math, physics or english? Those aren’t jobs, they are fields of study. Of course there are already some majors that have acceptable titles – accounting, nursing, and even biology-pre med. The courses in the majors would still have to change. Maybe business majors would be ok – not sure.

    No more silly required courses.

Why should everyone have to take algebra and a science course? If a student wants to be a high school english teacher, why should that student study algebra? Oh, they have to average grades and stuff? No, that is not true in the modern world. A computer could do it. Why should a marketing major take science? If they need any science ideas, they can just “google it”.

    2) A Student’s Thoughts on Education
    http://www.wired.com/2014/01/students-thoughts-education/

Ethan claims that part of the problem with the administrative side of education (evaluation, standards, testing) is that we (the people) try to apply the same management model to education that we use for nuclear reactors.

Great quote: “Why don’t we just manufacture robots instead of students? They last longer and always do what they’re told.“

Another great quote regarding the measurement of teaching: “If everything I learned in high school was a measurable objective, I haven’t learned anything.”

What is the point of education? It is to free minds and to inspire. We do not.

That leads to another one of my favorite quotes from Robert Heinlein:

“A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.”

This is especially a problem in undergraduate degree programs. An accounting major shouldn’t just study accounting.

    3) The Robotification of Society is Coming
    http://www.wired.com/2015/01/robotification-society-coming/

Robotification: The process by which tasks normally performed by humans are replaced with machines of some kind. These machines could be mechanical or electronic. Past tense: robotified.

You might think robotification is something that will happen in the future. Nope. It’s already started. Scholars might debate the exact beginning of the robotification of Earth, but we should all agree that it has already started.

Just take a moment and look around you. How many things do you interact with that were once done by humans but are now performed by machines?

Penso que vale a pena ver o vídeo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Pq-S557XQU

    Sobre o Baxter: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgQLzin4I9M&list=UUpSQ-euTEYaq5VtmEWukyiQ&index=11

    Mais dados: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baxter_(robot)

There is a lot of controversy about the introduction of Baxter into production lines. Many people are afraid of Baxter taking low-wage workers jobs due to costing about the same as their annual salary, except Baxter doesn’t require breaks or holidays, nor does it litigate against its employer. Others are not worried about Baxter taking jobs because humans are still needed to teach Baxter to perform their old jobs. Also, Baxter is adaptive, but not too adaptive that it can be completely independent. Baxter needs to be taught and like other robots, taken care of and maintained in order to remain completely operational.

According to Rodney Brooks, Baxter is not a threat to human jobs, because there are still tasks that people can do better, such as quality assurance or small assembly where things such as sensing tension are important; the robot is designed to do repetitive tasks, the people do the tasks they are good at, and together, the factory excels.

WHAT CAN WE DO TO PREPARE FOR ROBOTIFICATION?

Here is the important part. I think we could try to prevent robotification, but it might be too late. Just imagine trying to get everyone to stop using smart phones. Yes, that would be difficult.

Instead, I think the best plan is to educate in a way that is perpendicular to the direction of robotification.

What does that even mean? Well, at first robots will take over simple things. So, we shouldn’t educate people to focus on simple things – robots will do those jobs.

However, this also means that we shouldn’t be “job training” in education – especially in higher education. Unfortunately, this is what many administrators are pushing for. “Make the students ready for the real world.”

But the real world is the future and the future is unknown.

Preparing for the real world is preparing for the past. The past will be robots.

If colleges and universities stick with the “real world ready” strategy, they will be graduating students that will have to compete with robots.

Guess what… robots will probably be cheaper and better than many college graduates.

    Para já, partilho este link:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cargo_cult_science

Cargo cults—the religious practice that has appeared in many traditional tribal societies in the wake of interaction with technologically advanced cultures—focus on obtaining the material wealth (the “cargo”) of the advanced culture through magical means, by building mock aircraft landing strips and the like.
